Here is the short version. Your apartment complex dumpster is not built for a couch, and the city will not swing by to pick one up from a complex. Move-out in College Station is a scramble. This guide sorts out what goes where, so you are not standing over a broken futon at 11 p.m. wondering whose problem it is.
College Station Has Two Move-Out Seasons
Most people think move-out means May. That is only half true, and the half that matters for a dumpster is the other one.
On-campus halls empty in May. Texas A&M Residence Life closes the residence halls at 6 p.m. on the Saturday after finals. Students in those buildings live in a university facility, so the university handles the containers.
Off-campus leases end in late July. Most student leases in College Station run from August to the end of July. That is the wave that fills parking lots and curbs with mattresses and desks, and it is the one where somebody has to solve the junk problem themselves.
So if you rent an apartment or a house off campus, your deadline is late July or early August, not May. Fall classes start a few weeks later, which means the whole turnover gets squeezed into a short window. Book anything you need early, because every other tenant in town is on the same clock.
Your Complex Dumpster Will Not Save You
This is the part that catches people, and it is worth reading twice.
The City of College Station serves apartment complexes with shared containers, not with the curbside pickup that single-family homes get. Bulk items are prohibited from those city containers. The city also asks that the inside of the enclosure and the base of the containers stay free and clear of debris, excess household waste, or bulk items, to avoid skipped service.
Read that last part again. Stacking a mattress and a bookshelf next to the dumpster does not just annoy your property manager. It can get the whole complex’s collection skipped, which means every unit in your building is living with an overflowing enclosure during the busiest week of the year.
The city also does not provide recycling service to multi-family properties. So the blue-bin habit you had at home does not carry over to your apartment.
The City Will Not Pick It Up From an Apartment
College Station does run a curbside brush and bulky collection, and it is genuinely useful. It is also a residential service, tied to a residential account, and it is not how an apartment complex gets cleared.
If you are in a rental house, you may be able to use it. The rules are strict: items go to the curb in front of the residence before 8 a.m., brush and bulky items go in separate piles, and bags of garbage mixed into the pile will not be collected. Appliances containing freon are not accepted unless a certified extractor has already pulled the refrigerant.
Bryan runs its own brush and bulky collection with its own rules, including a limit of one truck load per residence each week and a requirement to keep piles at least five feet from fences, meters, and parked cars. Bryan does not publish an apartment-specific rule, so call Solid Waste at 979-209-5900 if you are unsure whether your address qualifies.
For a full unit, a rental house, or a group of roommates clearing out at once, a roll-off dumpster in College Station is usually the cleaner answer. Twin City Mission in Bryan is the strongest local option. They are at 2505 South College Avenue, and you can schedule a pickup at 979-822-7511, though pickups are limited to addresses inside the Bryan and College Station city limits. Their donation policy rules out non-working appliances, TVs more than five years old, computer equipment more than three years old, exercise equipment, cribs, car seats, strollers, and high chairs. It also rules out stained or ripped furniture and mattresses, which means a clean, undamaged mattress is welcome.
That mattress rule is the useful distinction. Goodwill’s donation guidelines say they cannot accept mattresses or box springs at all, though they do take furniture, clothing, and household goods. The Salvation Army and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore both operate locally and both take furniture, with pickup available for larger pieces. Call ahead on those two rather than trusting a number you found online, because their published contact details vary between listings.
Still on campus in May? Residence Life sets up donation bins in the roughly two weeks before halls close, at the Southside 24-Hour Desk in The Commons, the Northside Area 24-Hour Desk in Hullabaloo, and the White Creek Activity Center Office. They partner with Goodwill and other nonprofits, and there are textile recycling bins around campus for clothes and shoes.
What Cannot Go In the Dumpster
Some of the most common student items are the ones we cannot take, and Texas law is the reason for most of them.

The mini-fridge is the one that trips up nearly every student cleanout. It holds refrigerant, which keeps it out of a roll-off box, off the city’s bulky pickup without a certified extraction, and out of the landfill under state rules. For paint and chemicals, College Station and its partners hold a free household hazardous waste collection for Brazos Valley residents each spring and fall. Here is the catch worth planning around: a late-July move-out falls between those two events.
